About
Tommy Tse
Tommy Tse is Associate Professor in the Global Cross-Media Cultures program at the Department of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam. His research specialises in East Asia’s media and cultural industries, creative and platform work, consumer culture, and the sociology of fashion.
In 2022, Tse received the prestigious European Research Council Consolidator Grant for China Africa Fashion Power, a five-year ethnographic study of fashion and cultural flows between China and Africa in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative. His work has appeared in leading journals including the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Global Media and China, New Media & Society, Journal of Consumer Culture, Journal of Cultural Economy, Work, Employment and Society, and International Journal of Cultural Studies.

Before joining the University of Amsterdam, Tse taught at the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Central Saint Martins (UAL), and the Hong Kong Design Institute. He was elected to the Amsterdam Young Academy (2020–2024) and serves on the editorial boards of International Journal of Fashion Studies, Fashion, Style and Popular Culture, and International Journal of Cultural Studies.
Tse’s research agenda focuses on cultural production and mediation, creative labour, and consumer culture, with an emphasis on East Asia and South-South interactions. His ethnographic studies provide rare insights into media, fashion, and cultural industries across Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Africa, advancing decolonial and global perspectives in cultural studies.
